Product Overview There are 4 sections in which to interact: - The Main Section features a list of the most common rock forming minerals sorted alphabetically and some of the most common rocks sorted in drawers by the three rock types. Selecting a mineral or rock will display that specimen's reference information along with photograph and pronunciation. - The Glossary features a list of terms found throughout the program. Selecting a term will display the term's definition. - The Rock Viewer lets you create your own 12 slide shows from the library of rock and mineral photographs. You may create new slide shows and save them for later playback. Information about each slide is presented on demand by clicking to view the text on the control bar. You may use your slide shows as quizzing tools to help learn to identify the common rocks and rock forming minerals. - The Lab is the most hands-on part of the program. In the Lab, you can conduct the tests necessary to identify the 11 mystery minerals. The lab tests simulate a real geology lab environment and should offer a great learning experience while having fun doing so. Also on the disc: - Activity exercises for use with or without the Rocks! and Minerals CD-ROM (also includes the mystery mineral list) - Online manual (MANUAL.pdf) provides all you will need to get the most from this program. - Adobe's Acrobat Reader software for viewing and printing the manual and activities *********************** VI. Tips and Tricks Get the most of this ScienceWorks product by viewing the user Manual included on this disc. To view and print the manual, you will need to install Adobe's Acrobat Reader software also included on this disc. Note about the Rock and Mineral Specimen Screens... Some data is longer than the field view. To view this data, click on the truncated field to expand the field view. Click the field view window again to collapse the window. Note about the Lab To begin each lad test you must first drag the mystery mineral sample into the main task area. Once a result has been recorded for a lab test in the result window beside the test button you may select another test to perform. A result must be recorded for the current test in order to move on and perform another test. For your assistance in the fracture test of the Lab section, an outline of the hammer will appear in the area where you will want to place the hammer. Place it there then click the hammer again to test the fracture of the sample. An outline of the Acid Dropper is also shown to aid in placing the dropper in the correct position over the mineral sample. The list of mystery mineral choices is located in the ActiviT folder. The file is called "MysteryM.txt." *********************** VII.
